From June 2021 to September 2023, PITCO has been working on the Least Cost Electrification Study funded by The World Bank Group. The project aims to create a GIS-based least-cost electrification map that identifies the optimal route for electrification through grid expansion and off-grid services in Pakistan. The study is expected to assist the Federal and Provincial Governments in policy development and investments to achieve universal electricity access.

PITCO’s services include data collection, validation, and assembling digitized data layers to support the spatial planning platform. PITCO identified areas without electricity access, potential beneficiaries, and priority service delivery infrastructures. The project involved digitizing the existing and planned electricity grid network and renewable energy resource availability data. PITCO created a GIS-based spatial least-cost electrification plan, assessed various electrification options, and conducted stakeholder consultations. The project also included projections of electricity connections and demand, technology comparisons, and recommendations for off-grid applications.
