PITCO, along with International Resources Group (IRG), undertook the GIS mapping of Multan Electric Power Company’s (MEPCO) distribution network from October 2010 to September 2015 under the USAID-funded Power Distribution Program. The project aimed to create a geometric network for asset management and load flow analysis, covering more than 24,000 kilometers of 11 kV HT and 0.415 kV LT lines and 39,089 transformers. The pole-to-pole mapping included recording all assets on the network, such as substations, distribution transformers, conductors, poles, and service connections, to facilitate effective decision-making.
The GIS survey involved identifying all consumers and their service connections, followed by preparing a GIS base map and digitizing electrical network assets. The data was processed and exported to load flow analysis software, enabling the segregation of technical and non-technical losses. The project also involved developing HT and LT feeder rehabilitation proposals to reduce technical losses. GIS-based applications were developed to demonstrate various solutions in the power distribution sector, including distribution network setup, load management, customer information, asset management, billing, and customer services.
